Pilotage
Average pilotage time is about one and a half hours and is compulsory for all vessels over 35 metres long. The pilotage service is available 24-hours a day and can be engaged by prior arrangement through the vessel’s agent.
Towage
Towage services at Portland are owned and operated by Port of Portland. Tugs in service are Cape Nelson and Cape Grant, which are both twin screw with omni-directional propulsion and a bollard pull of 36 tonnes.

Tug Utilisation
The table below provides a guideline for minimum requirements for tug utilisation. Determination of number of tug(s) utilised by an individual Pilot will be subject to weather conditions and vessel type/characteristics, windage and displacement.

- No. 5 Berth occupied: 1 tug or a suitable bow thruster.
- K.S.A. No. 1 and No. 5 Berth: 1 tug and suitable bow thruster or 2 tugs if no bow thruster.
Remarks: A bow thruster may count as 1 tug, weather permitting and vessel displacement/bow thruster power ratio being favourable. Always check with the Duty Pilot beforehand.
Mooring
Port of Portland has skilled personnel who can provide mooring and unmooring services to all vessels.
Stevedoring
Stevedoring services are provided by Qube Ports and Port of Portland, which have well-trained workforces that are experienced at handling bulk and break-bulk cargoes.
Hours of work are 0800 to 1500, 1500 to 2200, and 2300 to 0600 or by arrangement.

Fresh Water Supply
Fresh water is available at all berths with loading rates of up to 160 tonnes per hour on No. 5 and No. 6 Berths, 80 tonnes per hour on No. 1 and No. 2 Berths and 30 tonnes per hour on the Smelter Berth.
